What Job Should You Apply for Next?

What Job Should You Apply for Next?

You know you want a change. But what kind of change?

A new school? A different role? A completely different pace? Or maybe you just need to pause before you decide anything at all.

This 16-question quiz is designed to help you cut through the noise and figure out what kind of job you should actually be looking for — based on where you are right now, not where you think you should be.

How It Works

There are 4 short sections. For each statement, choose the response that fits best:

  • A = Strongly agree
  • B = Somewhat agree
  • C = Not really

At the end, you'll get one of five career-direction profiles — with specific role suggestions to explore.

Be honest — this is just for you. There are no right or wrong answers.
Section 1: Your Current State
1. I enjoy teaching but feel like I'm in the wrong school.
2. My values don't align with how my school operates.
3. I know what kind of school I want — I just haven't found it yet.
4. I'd move countries or cities for the right teaching position.
Section 2: What's Draining You
5. Student behaviour is a major source of stress for me.
6. My workload is the main thing pushing me toward a change.
7. I feel unsupported by leadership when things get tough.
8. I feel creatively restricted in my current role.
Section 3: What You're Looking For
9. I want a role where I can grow professionally, not just survive.
10. I want more freedom to design my own lessons and projects.
11. I need a school where behaviour management isn't a daily battle.
12. I want to work at a school that values innovation and teacher voice.
Section 4: The Bigger Picture
13. I'm ready to commit to a new school for at least 2 years.
14. I'd consider a part-time or reduced-hours role if it meant better balance.
15. I still believe teaching is the right career for me — just not in this setting.
16. I'm seriously considering leaving teaching altogether.

The Five Profiles

Blue — Strategic Move

You're not running away — you're running toward something better. You know what you want in a school, and you're ready to find it. Your priority is a better-fit school where your values and skills are respected.

Orange — Lower-Pressure School

You're exhausted by the environment, not the profession. Behaviour challenges, lack of support, or chaotic systems are draining you. You need a calmer, better-resourced school where you can actually teach.

Yellow — Sustainable Role

You love teaching but the pace is killing you. Workload, hours, and expectations are unsustainable. You need a role — or a school — that protects your time and energy.

Green — Progressive School

You're creative, forward-thinking, and feeling boxed in. You need a school that values innovation, flexibility, and teacher voice — not one stuck in outdated routines.

Red — Pause & Decide

You're questioning everything — and that's okay. But making a big career decision from a place of exhaustion rarely ends well. Before applying anywhere, give yourself space to breathe and think clearly.

One Key Insight

Most teachers who feel stuck aren't in the wrong profession — they're in the wrong setting. The difference between dreading Monday and looking forward to it often comes down to one thing: fit.

The right school, the right role, the right pace — that's what this quiz helps you start to identify.

What to Do Next

Once you know your profile, browse open teaching positions on TheTeacherJob. Filter by country, subject, and school type to find roles that match what you actually need — not just what's available.

Your next move should be intentional. This quiz is your starting point.
