The role

The English DP Language and Literature teacher embodies the Taaleem ethos of excellence, innovation, creativity and compassion. Through inspirational teaching and a deep understanding of students’ individual learning needs, the teacher ensures that curriculum programmes lay firm foundations for academic and professional success, personal fulfilment and a love of lifelong learning. The role reports to the Principal or relevant Head of School and involves close collaboration with students, colleagues, parents and the senior leadership team.

Key responsibilities

  • Represent areas of knowledge, understanding and skills in all their richness to students.
  • Inculcate by precept and example the highest regard for truth, justice, equality of opportunity, human rights, benevolence and compassion.
  • Engage and motivate students to achieve at levels beyond their expectations using excellent subject knowledge, pedagogic and interpersonal skills.
  • Make full use of ICT and new technologies to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Plan lessons that take full account of students’ individual learning needs, styles and capabilities.
  • Encourage all students to become effective, confident and independent lifelong learners.
  • Plan and deliver a programme of learning opportunities to enrich the taught curriculum.
  • Maintain fair and consistent disciplinary practices and protect students from all forms of abuse.
  • Communicate openly and professionally with parents about student attainment and progress.
  • Model good practice in academic honesty and contribute actively to department discussions and meetings.
  • Plan and prepare schemes of work, teach with consistent effectiveness and set and mark work appropriately.
  • Assess, record and report on student development, progress and attainment.
  • Keep teaching methods and programmes of work under review and participate in professional development.
  • Advise on curriculum development and embed UAE heritage and culture within the curriculum.
  • Contribute to whole-school development and after-school activities as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or a relevant subject together with a recognised teaching qualification or licence.
  • A minimum of two years’ experience working in a recognised school or international school environment is preferred.
  • Strong subject knowledge of English Language and Literature at DP level.
  • Ability to set high expectations, promote good progress and demonstrate effective curriculum knowledge.
  • Skill in planning well-structured lessons, adapting teaching to meet the needs of all pupils and making accurate use of assessment.
  • Capacity to manage behaviour effectively and fulfil wider professional responsibilities.
  • Commitment to upholding high standards of personal and professional conduct, including safeguarding, respect for UAE culture and adherence to school policies.
