The role
An opportunity has arisen for a talented and passionate individual to join the Modern Foreign Languages Department at Haileybury as a French Language Assistant. The position is term time only, part time at 27 hours per week, with a start date of September 2026.
The Modern Foreign Languages Department is a team of 15 dedicated teachers and language assistants who teach French, German, Spanish and Italian. Within the school’s highly international pupil community, languages are popular and a healthy number of pupils study languages in the Sixth Form. Beyond the classroom, the department offers school trips abroad and a wide extra-curricular programme including French, German, Italian and Spanish Societies, theatre trips, language cafés, external competitions and Languages Week in September.
Key responsibilities
- Work closely with the Head of French to plan and deliver engaging French conversation lessons.
- Support pupils across a range of abilities, including working with near-native speakers in small groups or individually.
- Contribute to lesson planning, marking, record-keeping and ongoing communication regarding pupil progress.
Requirements
- Educated to degree level.
- Excellent communication skills and strong organisational ability.
- Genuine enthusiasm for working with young people.
- Native or near-native French speaker.
- Considering a career in teaching and eager to inspire a lifelong love of languages in students.
