Hastings School, founded in 1971, serves students aged 2-18 across six sites in Madrid. The school has 1,415 students representing 56 nationalities and forms part of the Cognita family of schools. The role
This is a permanent, full-time position for a Head of Biology, commencing 31/08/2026. The post holder will lead a dynamic department, deliver outstanding teaching up to A Level and ideally IBDP, and drive curriculum development while supporting university pathways and contributing to pastoral and extracurricular life.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the Biology department and inspire students and colleagues to develop a genuine passion for the subject
- Deliver outstanding classroom teaching with high expectations and effective use of data and assessment
- Plan and develop the Biology curriculum across relevant year groups
- Line-manage department members and foster a collaborative, high-performing team culture
- Promote excellence in science education and support students with university applications
- Contribute to the wider life of the school through pastoral care and extracurricular activities
Requirements
- Qualified and experienced Biology teacher able to teach up to A Level and ideally IBDP
- Strong organisational skills and a clear commitment to raising academic standards
- Proven ability to lead, manage change and work collaboratively
- Thorough understanding of outstanding teaching, learning and assessment practices
- Enthusiasm for working with young people and a strong commitment to safeguarding and student wellbeing
- Capacity to inspire, motivate and develop colleagues
