About the school

Swanbourne House School is a co-educational preparatory school for pupils aged 3 to 13, located in the Buckinghamshire countryside approximately 20 minutes from Aylesbury and Milton Keynes. The role

We are seeking a compassionate, dedicated and proactive Head of Boarding and Teacher of Humanities to join our pastoral and teaching team. The Head of Boarding plays a central role in the daily lives of boarders, acting in loco parentis and creating a supportive, home-from-home environment. The post holder will work closely with pupils, parents and staff to ensure the smooth running of the boarding house, with responsibility for welfare, safety and activities throughout the week and at weekends. The successful candidate will also teach a reduced timetable, ideally in History, delivering engaging and inspiring lessons that foster curiosity and a love of learning. This is a residential role and a comfortable flat will be provided within the boarding house.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality pastoral care for boarding pupils, ensuring their welfare and safety at all times.
  • Organise and oversee a programme of activities for boarders during weekdays and weekends.
  • Work in close partnership with pupils, parents and colleagues to maintain the effective operation of the boarding house.
  • Deliver a reduced teaching timetable in Humanities, with a preference for History, creating challenging and inspiring lessons.
  • Act in loco parentis, maintaining a nurturing and secure boarding environment.

Requirements

  • Compassionate, dedicated and proactive approach to pastoral and academic responsibilities.
  • Ability to teach Humanities, ideally with experience in History; outstanding teachers without subject-specific experience who demonstrate enthusiasm and aptitude to develop expertise are also welcome.
  • Strong commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
  • Willingness to undergo all required child protection screening, including checks with past employers, the Disclosure and Barring Service and an online background check.
