The role

GEMS Metropole School Al Waha seeks an ambitious and experienced Head of English to join the team in January 2027. This position offers an inspirational English leader the chance to advance their career, gain international experience and contribute meaningfully to a world-class school within the GEMS global network.

As Head of English, the post-holder will lead and develop the department, maintain high standards of teaching and learning, and support colleagues to secure the best possible outcomes for students. The role also involves close collaboration with the wider leadership team to advance the school’s curriculum and overall development.

Key responsibilities

• Provide inspirational leadership and support to the English department, fostering a culture of collaboration, high expectations and continuous improvement.
• Lead curriculum development to ensure the English programme is engaging, challenging, inclusive and aligned with student needs.
• Deliver outstanding teaching and learning with a proven record of strong student outcomes at GCSE and A-Level.
• Support and develop colleagues through coaching, mentoring and the sharing of exemplary practice.
• Use assessment and data effectively to monitor progress and identify areas for development.
• Contribute actively to the school’s extra-curricular programme and community events.

Requirements

• Hold a BEd or Bachelor’s degree with PGCE, PGDE or equivalent.
• Demonstrate strong knowledge and understanding of the English curriculum, including GCSE and A-Level.
• Possess proven experience of teaching GCSE and A-Level English.
• Have previous experience of leading a department or subject area, or show clear readiness for a Head of Department role.
• Exhibit excellent interpersonal and communication skills for effective work with colleagues, students, parents and the wider community.
• Display creativity, enthusiasm and a genuine passion for English, with a commitment to fostering a love of reading, writing and literature.
