About the school

Runnymede College is a private non-denominational British school in Madrid offering a British education to boys and girls of all nationalities from the age of two to eighteen. The education offered follows the British National Curriculum.

Founded as a private school in September 1967, the primary school was inaugurated in 1987, and since 1990 the whole School has been located in La Moraleja, in the north of Madrid. The School is divided into Pre-Prep (Pre Nursery to Year 3), Prep (Years 4 to 8) and Senior School (Years 9 to 13).

Academic levels are high at Runnymede College. In June 2025, 57% of students achieved A-A* at A level. In addition, 67% of pupils gained A*-A grades at IGCSE. In the graduating class of 2025, 83% of pupils going to the UK attended Top 10 universities. Top-ranking UK universities welcoming this year’s graduates include Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL and LSE. Students in the US have already started their higher education at Harvard, Columbia, UPenn and Brown. A number of students remain in Spain at institutions including ICADE, IE and ICAI, while others continue their education in world-leading institutions in France and Ireland.

The role

The school is looking to recruit an outstanding Head of Economics to join the Senior School from September 2026. The successful applicant will be responsible for delivering engaging and varied lessons to Year 12 and 13 A Level Economics and Business students. The Department follows the Edexcel (Pearson) A-Level specification, with all assessment taking place at the end of the two-year course. The role includes supporting students with university applications and providing guidance on university preparation, such as wider reading. The successful applicant will teach A* calibre pupils and participate fully in extension programmes, such as the Year 12 Extended Essay Competition. This role may include opportunities to be involved in the pastoral and co-curricular aspects of the school, such as Economics Society or Model United Nations.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver engaging and varied lessons to Year 12 and 13 A Level Economics and Business students that cater to the learning needs of all pupils.
• Enthuse pupils and maintain high expectations of effort and behaviour.
• Support students with university applications and provide guidance on university preparation, including wider reading.
• Participate fully in extension programmes such as the Year 12 Extended Essay Competition.
• Play an active role in the co-curricular life of the school.

Requirements

• A good honours degree from a British University in Economics, Business Studies, Maths or a related subject.
• A PGCE or other qualified teacher status for secondary education.
• Recent experience teaching A Level Economics.
• Previous experience as Head of Department.
• Recent experience teaching A Level Business (preferred).
• The ability to modify learning strategies to target the needs of individual students.
• Proven classroom management skills with high expectations of pupils’ effort and behaviour.
• Organised, able to prioritise and meet deadlines.
• Native-level English speaker.

Previous experience of an international school and recent experience as a teacher in a school in the UK are desirable but not essential.
