The role

The Head of Physical Education (Secondary) will provide strategic leadership for the department, ensuring outstanding teaching and learning across all Key Stages. The post holder will lead curriculum development, staff performance and student achievement while promoting the subject across the academy community. The role commences in January 2027.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the strategic direction and development of the Physical Education department, including vision setting, data analysis, improvement planning and self-evaluation.
  • Develop and sustain an outstanding teaching and learning culture that secures excellent outcomes for all students.
  • Lead, manage and develop staff, including recruitment, performance appraisal and professional development.
  • Ensure appropriate schemes of work are in place, regularly reviewed and inclusive of provision for SEN/POD, G&T and EAL students.
  • Monitor and review student progress through data analysis, lesson observations, work scrutiny and parental engagement.
  • Lead curriculum development, resourcing and effective preparation for examinations and assessments, including BTEC Sport Level 2 and 3.
  • Organise key events, extra-curricular activities and moderation processes in line with academy quality assurance procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with parents and ensure high-quality departmental communication through reports, meetings and other channels.
  • Represent the department at cross-curricular committees and collaborate with senior leaders to align departmental practices with whole-academy policies.
  • Undertake academic mentoring, form tutoring, duties, cover and examination invigilation as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related subject together with a PGCE or other recognised teaching qualification.
  • Minimum of six years' leadership experience of the English National Curriculum, including GCSE and A Level, with BTEC Sport Level 2 and 3 experience.
  • Previous experience working with students for whom English is not their first language.
  • Passion for teaching and a commitment to educating the whole child.
  • High level of professionalism and consistent involvement in extracurricular activities.
  • Recent and relevant experience in safeguarding, child protection and health and safety training.
