Secondary Mathematics Teacher

🏷️ Teacher πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Έ Cataluna πŸ• Posted 3h ago

The role

At BFIS, we want students who can reason through complex problems. The Secondary Mathematics Teacher delivers a concept-based, inquiry-driven curriculum aligned with Common Core Mathematics Standards, taught within the IB MYP framework, and teaches the IB-prescribed curriculum for those assigned to Diploma Programme math courses.

BFIS teachers are collaborative and reflective. They make student thinking visible, build lessons around problem-solving and productive struggle rather than pace, and design experiences that work for a diverse student body, including bilingual and multilingual learners and students with learning enrichment needs. Teaching here is grounded in research-based practice, with real attention to depth over breadth and to students developing confidence and a genuine sense of themselves as capable mathematicians.

The position reports directly to the Principal, Associate Principal and Learning Leader.

Key responsibilities

Teaching and Learning

  • Plan and deliver concept-driven math learning experiences aligned with the IB MYP framework and, where assigned, the DP curriculum.
  • Design units of inquiry that connect key and related math concepts, global contexts, and ATL skills, in alignment with Common Core Mathematics Standards.
  • Build daily lessons around reasoning, multiple representations, and mathematical discourse rather than rote procedure.
  • Differentiate instruction so students with learning enrichment needs receive appropriate support and students ready for greater challenge are extended.
  • Use technology purposefully to support math learning.
  • Create a classroom where student thinking is visible and developed through discussion and collaboration.

Assessment and Feedback

  • Assess student learning against MYP and DP criteria and provide timely, specific feedback.
  • Design and use formative and summative assessments that shape subsequent instruction.
  • Record assessment data accurately and on time in divisional systems and use it to track progress.
  • Complete report cards, progress reports, and parent-teacher conferences on schedule.
  • Work with colleagues to examine student work and assessment data, identify patterns, and adjust instruction accordingly.

Collaboration and Professional Practice

  • Plan, reflect, and refine teaching practice together with colleagues.
  • Contribute to a professional learning community built on honest, evidence-based dialogue.
  • Take part in curriculum development and interdisciplinary work where mathematics adds real value.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries with student records and colleague information.

Student Support and Wellbeing

  • Build relationships with students that make the classroom feel safe, inclusive, and respectful.
  • Support math language development alongside conceptual understanding for multilingual learners.
  • Communicate clearly with students, parents, and colleagues to support student success.
  • Follow BFIS child protection and safeguarding policies and complete required safeguarding training.

Contribution to School Life

  • Take part in school events, activities, and initiatives connected to the BFIS mission.
  • Support mathematics-related co-curricular activities, including math club or competitions.
  • Take on additional duties as assigned by the Principal or Associate Principal.

Requirements

  • Recognized teaching qualification in mathematics or a related field, or a teaching degree with a relevant postgraduate qualification.
  • Valid teaching certification or credential (required).
  • Minimum 3–4 years of classroom teaching experience in mathematics.
  • Master’s degree in a closely related field (preferred).
  • Experience teaching within an international and/or IB MYP or DP context (preferred).
  • Genuine commitment to international mindedness, belonging, and global citizenship.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and deliver inquiry-based math lessons that emphasize depth over breadth.
  • Comfortable using student work and assessment data to adjust instruction.
  • Ability to support diverse learners, including bilingual and multilingual students and students with learning enrichment needs.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Spanish or additional language proficiency (desirable).

All teachers are expected to serve as advisors or FLEX teachers, schedule permitting. Additional duties may be assigned by school leadership as needed.
