Oakham Shires School is an independent SEN school in Rutland, part of Options Autism. The school provides a nurturing environment for autistic children and young people with associated needs, supporting pupils to achieve outcomes within their EHCPs while developing communication, life skills and accredited learning in English, Maths and Science.

The role
We are seeking a Secondary Science Teacher to join Oakham Shires School on a permanent, term-time basis starting in September 2026. The position is full-time at 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 4.30pm, with a salary of ยฃ39,000 per annum.
The successful candidate will deliver engaging, hands-on Science lessons that inspire autistic pupils and those with additional needs. You will adapt teaching to individual requirements, contribute to an innovative curriculum and work collaboratively with teaching assistants, therapists and families to support pupil progress and wellbeing.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver engaging, hands-on Science lessons that spark curiosity and inspire a love of learning.
- Adapt teaching to meet the individual needs of autistic pupils and those with additional learning needs.
- Monitor and assess progress, using feedback to maximise pupil achievement.
- Help shape an innovative Science curriculum that prepares pupils for future success.
- Work collaboratively with teaching assistants, therapists and families to provide a consistent, pupil-centred approach.
- Create a safe, structured and nurturing classroom environment.
- Promote independence, resilience, emotional wellbeing and personal development.
- Contribute to whole-school improvement and deliver outstanding outcomes for every pupil.
Requirements
- Hold a degree and UK Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
- Hold a full UK driving licence.
- Demonstrate passion for bringing Science to life and inspiring young people to achieve their potential.
- Show experience in, or enthusiasm for, working with autistic pupils and those with SEND or complex needs.
- Be creative, adaptable and able to tailor learning to meet individual needs.
- Be an excellent communicator who builds positive relationships with pupils, families and colleagues.
- Be calm, resilient and solution-focused, with a positive approach to overcoming challenges.
- Be committed to safeguarding, inclusion and delivering exceptional outcomes for every learner.
- Be eager to continue developing professionally within a supportive school environment.
