Teacher of Art and Design
The role
We are seeking an enthusiastic and inspiring Teacher of Art and Design to join our thriving creative community at Glenalmond College as a member of our well-resourced DART Faculty. The successful candidate will be passionate about the visual arts and design, and committed to delivering high-quality teaching and learning experiences across a range of courses, including GCSE and A-level Art and Design. They will inspire pupils to develop their creative practice, critical thinking, and visual literacy, while fostering an appreciation for art and design in its broadest sense. The successful candidate must be registered or be eligible to register with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) to teach Art.
Key responsibilities
- Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging, challenging, and creative lessons in Art and Design at GCSE and A-level and across other year groups, developing pupils' practical skills, critical thinking, and independent creative voice.
- Support pupils in developing skills across a range of media, disciplines, and digital technologies, including drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media, photography, CAD, CAM and three-dimensional work, as appropriate to the curriculum.
- Guide pupils in the development of personal investigation portfolios, supporting analytical and evaluative responses to art and design history, theory, and practice.
- Assess, record, and report on the progress and attainment of pupils in accordance with Faculty and school policies.
- Contribute to the development of schemes of work, resources, and teaching strategies within the Faculty.
- Maintain high expectations for pupil achievement and behaviour, fostering a positive, inclusive, and creatively stimulating classroom environment.
- Participate fully in departmental and Faculty meetings, collaborative planning, and professional development opportunities.
- Contribute to the wider life of the school through involvement in enrichment activities, co-curricular clubs, and other activities, including the organisation of exhibitions and creative events.
- Engage in continual professional reflection to enhance teaching practice and support departmental improvement.
Requirements
- A good honours degree in Fine Art, Design, or a closely related discipline.
- Recognised teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE or equivalent).
- Current registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) to teach Art.
- Proven experience of teaching Art and Design to examination level at a secondary school.
- Experience of teaching A Level Art and Design, or equivalent examination specification.
- Strong subject knowledge and specialism across core areas of Art and Design, including contextual studies, art and design history, and a breadth of practical disciplines.
- Evidence of delivering consistently high-quality teaching and learning.
- A genuine enthusiasm for art and design and the ability to inspire and instil enthusiasm in pupils of all abilities.
- Excellent classroom management skills and the ability to create a positive, inclusive, and creatively stimulating learning environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work as part of a team and build positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, and parents.
- High expectations of pupils' achievement, effort, and creative ambition.
- Commitment to continual professional development and reflective practice.
- A collaborative approach and willingness to contribute to the wider life of the school.
- Demonstrable experience of pastoral care provision.
