About the school

Brighton College has an outstanding reputation for its Art teaching and is a centre of excellence. The subject is vibrant, popular and high profile. The Art department comprises six members of teaching staff and two art technicians. Art is taught throughout the College from Year 7 to Year 13. The Art Department at Brighton College has some of the best results at A-level and GCSE in the country. In 2026 the department achieved 100% A*-A at A-level, alongside equally impressive results at GCSE. All students study Art in Years 7 and 8, with many choosing to continue their studies in Year 9 and beyond.

The Art Departments are housed in the purpose-built Alexander Centre for Visual Arts, which provides magnificent opportunities for Brighton College Artists and Photographers. Diverse programmes of visual and written activities are offered, which are reflected in each pupil’s sketchbook and larger scale work. At GCSE level, the emphasis of the teaching is towards the pupils’ individual development. There are 139 pupils studying for GCSEs in the Art and Photography department, and 36 at A-level. Over the past six years, 70 Brighton College pupils were accepted into Art Colleges for Foundation and direct entry Degree courses at leading institutions including The Slade, Kingston, Falmouth, Chelsea, Central St. Martin’s and Glasgow School of Art. Pupils have also gained places to study Architecture and Art History at universities such as UCL, Cambridge, Durham and St. Andrews.
