About the school

Brighton College is seeking to appoint a Teacher of Geography. The Geography Department is a thriving and highly successful department at the College, comprising eight teachers and educating around 550 pupils from Year 9 to Upper Sixth. The subject is one of the College’s strongest academic departments, with consistently excellent outcomes at both GCSE and A-level. Pupils follow the Edexcel A GCSE and AQA A-level specifications.

Around 30 pupils take the subject in each of the Sixth Form year groups. A-level results are consistently strong, with between 35-55% of the cohort attaining A* and 75-85% achieving A* or A in recent years. All pupils, regardless of ability, usually gain at least a B grade. Many pupils each year progress to study Geography and related disciplines at leading universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.

At GCSE, up to 140 pupils usually choose to study geography each year, making it one of the most popular optional subjects. Results have been consistently among the top performing departments at the College, with over 55% usually gaining the top grade 9, about 85% achieving 9-8 grades and 95% achieving 9-7 grades.

The department offers an ambitious and intellectually stimulating curriculum that encourages pupils to engage critically with contemporary global issues. In Year 9, pupils study a bespoke course exploring themes such as development, globalisation and a project using ArcGIS, before beginning the GCSE course. In Year 7 and 8, geography forms part of the interdisciplinary course called ‘The Story of our Land’, which integrates geography, history, religious studies and philosophy.

Pupils regularly participate in academic societies and geography competitions, with success in events such as the local Geographical Association’s Worldwise Quiz and the Royal Geographical Society’s ‘Young Geographer of the Year’ competition. Fieldwork is central to the department. Local investigations include the Sussex Coast and River Tillingbourne, and international trips have previously included Iceland, Morocco, the Azores, Geneva and Chamonix.

The role

Brighton College is seeking to appoint a Teacher of Geography on a fixed-term contract, starting January 2027, or earlier if possible, and ending in December 2027. Applications from candidates looking for part-time opportunities will also be considered.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver stimulating and ambitious lessons that encourage independent thought and discussion across the age and ability range.
• Maintain the department’s high standards of academic achievement and public examination performance.
• Contribute to the continued development of the department beyond the classroom through enrichment activities, competitions and wider academic opportunities.
• Contribute to the school’s pastoral system, generally as a tutor in one of the 16 houses.
• Contribute to the co-curricular life of the school through the extensive Games programme and/or through the leadership of one of over 100 school societies.
• Participate in the Masterclass programme, a series of weekly lessons celebrating the enjoyment of learning.
