About the school

Downside School is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school for pupils aged 11 to 18, and one of England’s oldest and most distinguished Catholic schools. The School is situated at the foot of the Mendip Hills, twelve miles south of the city of Bath.

The role

We have a vacancy for a part time Teacher of History in a small but well-resourced and innovative Department. History remains a popular option at both GCSE and A Level. You will teach History to Years 7 to 13, up to A Level and Oxbridge entrance level. The Department has achieved consistent and notable results in recent years, with 50% achieving an A grade at A Level in 2025, and 76% achieving 9-6 at GCSE.

Key responsibilities

  • Teach History effectively across Years 7 to 13, including A Level and Oxbridge preparation.
  • Promote History through academic enrichment activities.
  • Seek opportunities to develop teaching and learning within the subject.
  • Engage with pupils outside the classroom, including delivery of the co-curricular programme.
  • Fulfil tutor responsibilities as required by the role.

Requirements

  • Experienced teacher of History or Early Career Teacher with the ability to teach to A Level standard.
  • Excellent subject knowledge.
  • Ability to create an atmosphere in lessons that supports active learning and collaborative pupil engagement.
  • Dynamic, creative and inspirational approach that motivates pupils to achieve their best.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development.
