The King’s School, Gloucester is one of the oldest schools in the country, with a heritage dating back to at least 1087 and a re-foundation in 1541. Physical Education is a cornerstone of the school’s mission to develop well-rounded young adults. The department comprises eight full-time and four part-time specialist staff who teach pupils aged 8 to 18 in mixed classes. The school maintains a strong record of pupils gaining representative honours across a wide range of sports and supports every pupil in achieving their potential. Recent successes include the 1st XV Rugby team winning the National Vase at Twickenham, county tournament wins for girls’ hockey squads, county honours for cricketers, and an ongoing partnership with the Birmingham Panthers Super League netball franchise.

The role

The King’s School seeks an enthusiastic and dynamic part-time teacher of PE and Games (0.6 FTE) to join a highly successful Sports Department from January 2027. The fixed-term contract runs until August 2027. Experience coaching netball and at least one other major school sport to a high standard (ideally hockey and/or cricket) is highly advantageous. The successful candidate must be comfortable delivering academic PE to KS5.

The position offers the opportunity to contribute to a motivated team of Physical Education teachers and to support the continuing development of the subject in both mixed and single-sex classes. A full programme of Saturday and midweek fixtures is undertaken, and a commitment to the extra-curricular life of the school is essential.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver first-class coaching of core King’s sports (netball, rugby and/or cricket) from Year 4 to Year 13, appropriate to pupils’ abilities.
• Provide innovative academic teaching of PE (BTEC, GCSE and A-Level) appropriate to pupils’ ages and abilities.
• Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young persons.
• Assess and record students’ progress in accordance with departmental and school policies.
• Develop and share teaching and learning resources.
• Attend and contribute to departmental meetings.
• Monitor the work and progress of pupils, including those with specific learning needs.
• Participate in CPD to maintain up-to-date coaching practice.
• Explore innovative ways of delivering sport through the curriculum.
• Initiate and promote links with the Junior School where appropriate.
• Help develop partnerships and links with external organisations.
• Promote awareness of relevant career opportunities for students.
• Contribute to the extra-curricular life of the school, including fixtures after school and at weekends.
• Take part in the pastoral life of the school as a Form Tutor or Cover Tutor.

Requirements

• A degree related to Sport or equivalent experience in the field of Sport.
• Experience of teaching at KS3–5.
• Experience of, or willingness to deliver, academic teaching of PE including A-Level.
• Enthusiasm and passion for the subject, the school and the pupils.
• Dynamic and effective teaching strategies that engage all learners.
• Initiative, resourcefulness and excellent organisational skills.
• Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and maintain professionalism at all times.
• Willingness to undertake further professional development.

Further post-graduate qualifications, experience relating to PE and Games, and a PGCE/QTS are desirable.
