The role

Higham Lane School seeks a Teaching Assistant Level 2 to work under the direction of the SEND Coordinator, with guidance from teaching staff. The postholder will support pupils with additional needs, individually or in groups, both inside and outside the classroom, ensuring they can access the full curriculum and make progress.

Key responsibilities

  • Contribute to curriculum planning, evaluation and implementation, and assist in the delivery of lessons and agreed learning activities, adjusting approaches according to pupil responses.
  • Support individuals or groups during independent or group work, explaining tasks, reinforcing key concepts, using practical resources and keeping pupils engaged and motivated.
  • Promote inclusion, positive interactions and cooperative working among pupils, while supporting their personal, social and emotional development and self-esteem.
  • Create, write, update and review targets on pupil passports each term and distribute them to staff.
  • Monitor and report on individual and group progress, contribute to assessments through observation, and attend annual review meetings.
  • Implement strategies to manage pupil behaviour and support pupils during social times and off-site trips.
  • Provide general care, safety and welfare support, including personal care and physical care tasks following appropriate training and risk assessment.
  • Prepare and care for teaching materials and resources, produce differentiated worksheets and displays, and maintain accurate records.
  • Liaise with parents, carers, specialist teachers and other professionals, and keep keyworker meeting records up to date.

Requirements

  • Hold a recognised NVQ Level 2 qualification in a relevant subject, or demonstrate equivalent knowledge, experience and skills, with a preference for progress toward NVQ Level 3.
  • Possess GCSE English and Mathematics at grades Aโ€“C or equivalent.
  • Have experience of working as a teaching assistant, including with students who have autism, attachment difficulties, ADHD and severe cognition and learning needs.
  • Demonstrate good communication and listening skills, with the ability to present information clearly to parents and external agencies.
  • Show a good level of knowledge in at least one curriculum area and the ability to use ICT effectively to support learning.
  • Understand school policies and relevant local and national frameworks, including those relating to child protection, health and safety, equal opportunities and special educational needs.
  • Be able to plan own work, solve problems, exercise initiative and transfer training into effective practice.
